Today, I am guiding you through the very heart of Jongno: from the traditional elegance of Samcheong-dong, past the majestic Gwanghwamun Square, and down into the serene waters of the Cheonggyecheon Stream.

  • 📍 Route: Samcheong-dong → Gyeongbokgung Stone Wall Road → Gwanghwamun Square → Cheonggyecheon Stream.

  • 👟 Best Time to Visit: October to mid-November (Late afternoon to catch the autumn golden hour).

  • 💡 Key Highlight: The breathtaking sight of golden ginkgo trees, vibrant Hanboks, and centuries-old architecture against a backdrop of soaring glass skyscrapers

The Tranquil Elegance of Samcheong-dong

Our journey begins in Samcheong-dong, a neighborhood that perfectly preserves the quiet dignity of traditional Korea. In autumn, the winding alleys are beautifully blanketed in fallen yellow ginkgo leaves. As you walk, you are greeted by the elegant, sweeping tiled roofs (giwa) of Hanok buildings, which thoughtfully house boutique art galleries and artisanal cafes. Unlike the neon-lit streets of other districts, Samcheong-dong offers a slow, poetic atmosphere. Sitting by a window with a warm cup of traditional Korean tea, watching the autumn leaves gently fall against the antique brickwork, is an unforgettable healing experience.

The Majestic Walls of Gyeongbokgung Palace

As you walk south from Samcheong-dong, you will naturally follow the Gyeongbokgung Palace Stone Wall Road (Doldam-gil). You do not even need to enter the palace grounds to feel its overwhelming grandeur, though the massive stone walls look especially romantic framed by red autumn maple leaves.

Here is a fascinating cultural sight you will immediately notice: the streets are filled with people wearing beautiful, colorful Hanboks (traditional Korean clothing)! Did you know that if you wear a Hanbok, admission to Gyeongbokgung Palace is completely free? Thanks to this brilliant policy, thousands of locals and tourists rent traditional attire to explore the area. Walking under the autumn canopy, surrounded by people gracefully strolling in vibrant silk skirts, makes you feel like you have stepped straight into a historical K-drama.

Gwanghwamun & The Gaze of King Sejong

At the end of the stone walls, the spatial landscape opens up dramatically to reveal Gwanghwamun Square. Here, the imposing main gate of the palace stands proudly, with the rugged, autumn-tinted peaks of Bugaksan Mountain serving as a breathtaking natural backdrop.

In the very center of this grand, wide plaza sits the magnificent golden statue of King Sejong the Great. As the visionary monarch who created Hangul (the Korean alphabet), he sits with a benevolent smile, overlooking the bustling city he helped shape. Surrounded by towering modern skyscrapers and clear autumn skies, this square is the undeniable historical, cultural, and political heart of South Korea.

Cheonggyecheon: Nature Reclaimed in the City Center

Just a short walk from the statue of King Sejong, the concrete jungle suddenly gives way to an unexpected miracle: the Cheonggyecheon Stream. Once covered by a heavy concrete highway, this 10.9km waterway was beautifully restored.

The moment you step down the stairs to the water level, the harsh noise of the city magically fades away. In autumn, the stream banks are lined with gentle silver grass (Eulalia) swaying in the cool breeze. Walking along the clear water, crossing the charming stepping stones, and watching white herons rest near the lush banks, you realize this is the ultimate urban oasis. It is a space where nature and the city coexist in perfect harmony, offering Seoulites a peaceful, breathing retreat.

💡 Kovolution Practical Tip: The Perfect Timing

To get the absolute best out of this route, rent a Hanbok in Samcheong-dong around 2:30 PM. Stroll down the palace walls as the autumn sun begins to set, creating a magical golden hour for your photos. Greet King Sejong at twilight, and by the time you reach Cheonggyecheon, the stream will be beautifully illuminated with romantic night lights!
